Baccarat in three choices: Banker, Player or Tie, ranked by what they cost
You never touch a card in baccarat, so the only skill left is picking the cheapest bet.
In baccarat you wager on Player, Banker or Tie and the cards play out by fixed rules. Banker costs the least at roughly 1.06 per cent house edge after commission, Player follows at about 1.24 per cent, and Tie is far more expensive. Scoreboards do not predict the next hand.
Baccarat has a reputation for tuxedos and high-roller rooms, but the actual game is closer to choosing between three doors. Once you pick, the dealer does the rest. Still weighing your options? Have a look at our Canada casino picks for 2026.
That simplicity makes budget discipline the main skill. The age rule applies as usual: 19 in most provinces, 18 in Alberta, Manitoba and Quebec.
How does a round play out?
Two hands are dealt, called Player and Banker, and these are labels rather than people. Each hand adds its card values and keeps only the last digit, so a 7 and an 8 make 5. Tens and face cards count zero. Whoever lands nearer to 9 wins, and a third card is drawn by set rules that the dealer or software applies for you.
What does each door cost?
| Bet | Payout | Approximate house edge | Per CAD 100 staked, long run |
|---|---|---|---|
| Banker | 1 to 1 minus 5% commission | 1.06% | About CAD 1.06 |
| Player | 1 to 1 | 1.24% | About CAD 1.24 |
| Tie | 8 to 1 at most tables | About 14% | About CAD 14 |
Some tables run a commission-free version in which a Banker win on 6 pays half. The figures shift, so read that table's own rules. If your goal is a long evening on a modest budget, the Tie door is the one to walk past.
Is the scoreboard a crystal ball?
The little grids of red and blue circles invite you to see streaks and zigzags. Humans love patterns. But the shoe does not owe you a Banker because Player has won five times, and the tiny effect of removed cards is far smaller than any chart suggests.
Enjoy the scoreboard as decoration if you like. Just never raise a bet because of it.
What about the extra side bets?
Pair bets, dragon bonuses and similar offers pay appealing multiples and carry heavier edges than the main game. Their paytables differ between studios, so read the one on your table and keep the stake small.
Where does baccarat live online?
Mostly in the live section, with squeeze and speed variants. Our live casino page lists what to inspect, including table limits. Bonuses rarely favour it, so read the rollover guide before accepting an offer that you intend to play at the baccarat table.
Questions readers ask us
Is baccarat good for beginners?
It is one of the easiest to learn, because the only decision is the bet. Stick to Banker or Player, which are the cheapest, and ignore Tie. Start with small stakes, decide your session limit before you sit down, and treat the scoreboard as scenery rather than advice.
Why does Banker pay a commission?
The drawing rules give the Banker hand a small natural advantage, so the casino usually charges about 5 per cent on winning Banker bets to even it out. Even after paying that commission, Banker still has the lowest house edge of the three main bets.
Is there a free way to practise baccarat?
Some studios offer RNG demo tables with play credits, which is perfect for learning the layout and the pace of a round. Live tables generally need real money. Our page on free casino games explains how to use demo mode without falling for sign-up traps.
