Rollover reality check: what a bonus multiplier costs in real dollars
A friendly 40x on the banner turns into a very specific number of bets once you run it through here.
Multiply the amount the rollover applies to (the bonus alone, or bonus plus deposit) by the multiplier, then divide by the share the game counts. The calculator below does this in Canadian dollars, so you can set one offer next to another using real figures instead of banner slogans.
Rollover, wagering requirement, playthrough: three names for one rule. You must place a certain amount of bets before bonus winnings may leave the casino. A multiplier like 40x sounds harmless until you see how many dollars it hides. A good place to start is our best online casinos in Canada.

How does the sum work?
Start with the base. If the rollover applies to the bonus alone, the base is the bonus. If it applies to bonus plus deposit, add both. Multiply by the multiplier, then divide by the share the game counts.
Say you receive a CAD 75 bonus with a 40x rollover on the bonus alone, in a slot that counts fully: 75 x 40 = CAD 3,000 of bets. Now imagine you prefer a table game counting 10 per cent. The same offer asks for CAD 30,000. Same bonus, a very different evening.
Why do some games count less?
Because casinos want the bonus used where their edge is largest. Slots tend to count in full, while table games, roulette and live tables count little or nothing, and a few slots are excluded altogether. The exact list lives in the bonus terms.
| Game family | What you often see |
|---|---|
| Slots | 100% (with exceptions) |
| Blackjack and card games | 0% to 20% |
| Roulette | 0% to 20% |
| Live dealer tables | 0% to 10% |
Ranges are typical rather than universal, so read the small print of your own offer.
What else belongs on the checklist?
- The biggest bet allowed while the bonus is live.
- The deadline for completing the rollover.
- Excluded games and the ceiling on bonus winnings.
- Whether the deposit is dragged into the rollover too.

Is the smallest multiplier always the best deal?
Not always. A 25x rollover that expires in 24 hours may be harder to clear than a 40x with a month to spare. Weigh the total to stake, the bet cap and the time you get. A no deposit bonus often carries a steeper multiplier but needs no money from you, which changes the comparison.
Questions readers ask us
Is 40x a lot?
It depends on what the multiplier applies to and how long you have. A bigger number means more betting before cashing out. Look at the total in dollars, the bet cap and the deadline together, and use the calculator to see whether the total fits the budget you have set.
Can I cash out in the middle of a bonus?
Usually not. Withdrawing early commonly cancels the bonus and the winnings that came from it. Some casinos let you forfeit the bonus and keep your own deposit if you have not yet wagered it. The terms explain which rule applies, so read them before pressing accept.
Does it work for free spins too?
Yes, with a small step. Winnings from free spins are often turned into bonus money that carries its own rollover. Type that amount as the bonus and use the multiplier from the terms. Also look for a cap on how much those winnings can be cashed out.
